Ethical Issues Reflection
I learned much more from the mini-lessons about technology-related ethical issues than I thought I would. I realized that I know very little about copyright issues and methods of cheating.
I came to understand more fully what a copyright is and how it relates to the classroom and me as a teacher. I did not realize that so many materials are under copyright and that the method for copyrighting is so simple. I now will pay more attention to the materials I use. I had never heard of Fair Use before this assignment, but I now understand that in many ways it makes life easier on educators especially. Though they have to learn what the boundaries of Fair Use are and abide by them, they are allowed to use much material that would otherwise not be for their use. It seems that the laws of copyright and fair use could be simplified and made more understandable to the public, especially when it comes to the grey areas of "public domain" and such.
I learned that it is very easy to step over the lines of ethical behavior when it comes to these matters of technology. Many people, such as myself, are unaware that they are acting unlawfully when they play music for their classroom, or make copies of articles to pass out and so forth. Because it is so easy, I need to be more aware of the laws and the definition of "ethical" behavior myself. The most useful information to me was about fair use. I believe it is the most useful to educators because under it they can understand what they legally can and cannot use for themselves and for their classrooms when it comes to educational and media material.
When I begin my teaching career I will come across these ethical issues in classes such as sewing, foods, finance or child development. It will be especially pertinent in giving the classes sewing patterns, new recipes, current information from magazines and journals, and more. I will also deal with these ethical issues in being aware of what is legal in student projects and assignments. I will make sure that they are not using technology to cheat in their work. I will be certaing not only that my own actions are ethical, but also that the students are obeying the appropriate laws in their own work.
